HERITAGE ALLIANCE
RESOURCES
The LGBTQ+ Heritage Alliance has collected the following resources associated with formal efforts to document LGBTQ+ history and culture. This page focuses on federal, state, and municipal documents and initiatives recounting places with LGBTQ+ significance. If you know of any documentation that is not listed here, or for any corrections, please contact us.
General Resources
LGBTQ+ people have been traditionally left out of the historical record. Fortunately, an increasing number of efforts are identifying, reclaiming, and raising awareness of places where LGBTQ+ people made important contributions to American history, faced discrimination, found community, and organized for their rights across the country. Through their focus on place, these initiatives connect people to the past by forming a tangible relationship to where history happened.
National Recognition Programs
The following sites are nationally recognized for their significance to the gay and lesbian rights movement or LGBTQ+ history. This list does not include nominations that solely mention LGBTQ+ history or recognize LGBTQ+ people without specific inclusion of LGBTQ+ history as an area of significance.
Historic Context Statements
A historic context statement is a document that provides a framework for understanding and evaluating the historical significance of places and spaces associated with LGBTQ+ communities.
