RESOURCES

The LGBTQ+ Heritage Alliance has collected the following resources associated with formal efforts to document LGBTQ+ history and culture. While non-exhaustive, this page focuses on federal, state, and municipal documents and initiatives recounting places with LGBTQ+ significance.   • National LGBTQ+ Survey and Network
    Since the 1990s, multiple efforts have conveyed LGBTQ+ history through historic sites across the United States. The LGBTQ+ Historic Sites Survey was launched in Fall 2023 to identify these efforts with the goal of developing an informal national network. The NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project took the lead in catalyzing these efforts, retaining consultants, developing and working with a committee, and safeguarding the information.   • LGBTQ America: A Theme Study of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer History

National Landmark Recognition Programs

The following are sites designated as National Historic Landmarks and/or listed on the National Register of Historic Places specifically for having LGBTQ+ history as an area of significance. This list does not include nominations that solely mention LGBTQ+ history or recognize LGBTQ+ people without specifically inclusion of LGBTQ+ history as an area of significance.

Historic Context Statements

A historic context statement is a document that provides a framework for understanding and evaluating the historical significance of places and spaces associated with LGBTQ+ communities.
